As a student at the University of Washington in 1976, Mark Drexler was fortunate to be selected as a participant in The Department of Architecture and Planning Architecture in Rome and Italian Hill Town programs. Under the tutelage of Professor Emeritus Astra Zarina, Mark lived and studied in Rome, and Civita di Bagnoregio, Italy. It was the latter location that would resonate deeply with Mark during his student days, and lead to a lifetime affiliation with, and affection for Civita and its residents.
Mark and his wife Ann became Founding Donors of the Civita Institute in order to contribute to sustaining the legacy of Professor Zarina, and Civita di Bagnoregio. The Drexlers shared their passion for Civita with their family as Mark and Ann’s three daughters, Alexandra, Mackenzie and Delaney, their grandson Carter, and Mark’s parents Esther and George became frequent visitors to Civita.
In addition to their support of Civita Institute, the Drexler Family maintains a commitment to being advocates for a society that represents and supports the diversity that our world reflects. The confluence of these ideas lead to the formation of The Drexler Family Diversity Fellowship, allowing those from different backgrounds and cultures to share an experience, and to be the beneficiary of an opportunity for growth, in this special place that has been life changing for Mark.
The Drexler Family Diversity Fellowship is established to promote and encourage a more culturally and ethnically diverse participant base for The Civita Institute Fellowship Program and The Civita Institute.

Promote the Drexler Family Diversity Fellowship via outreach to groups and individuals in communities that are underrepresented in allied disciplines from which The Civita Institute Fellows are drawn.
Enhance the legacy, sustainability of The Civita Institute, and enrich the body of work The Civita Institute continues to build, by providing the perspective of people who have had a unique life experience informed by ethnicity and cultural differences.
Promote inclusiveness, social equity, and true cultural exchange, both at The Civita Institute, and for the citizens of Civita di Bagnoregio.

The Drexler Family Diversity Fellowship (DFDF) provides sponsorship of a thirty day Civita Institute Fellowship for an applicant who self-identifies as a member of a historically underrepresented group. The DFDF will provide a stipend in the amount of $2,000.00 to one Drexler Family Diversity Fund Fellow each year. In addition to the fellowship stipend, lodging for one month at the Civita Institute facilities in Civita di Bagnoregio is included. The stipend may be used for living expenses and/or air travel. Applicants must have 3 years of work in their field, and meet The Civita Institute criteria for fellowship selection.
